The Irish Medtech Association, the Ibec group that represents the medtech sector, Enterprise Ireland and IDA Ireland has announced the winners of the Irish Medtech Awards. The accolade of Medtech Company of the Year was awarded to Cerenovus, part of Johnson and Johnson MedTech.

Ibec head of sectors, and director of medtech and Engineering Dr Sinead Keogh said: “The Irish medtech community has demonstrated its resilience in the past two years, and we’re delighted to bring 500 industry leaders together to celebrate the sector at the Irish Medtech Awards her in Galway tonight.
“I am delighted to announce that this year’s winner of the Medtech Company of the Year is Cerenovus, part of Johnson and Johnson MedTech. Cerenovus is a leader in neurovascular care, with a broad portfolio of innovative medical devices designed to aid in clot removal procedures, that is committed to changing the trajectory of stroke and dedicated to helping physicians protect people from a lifetime of hardship. Cerenovus in Galway is recognised internationally for its research work in this science of acute ischemic stroke working in collaboration both with universities globally and locally with the Atlantic Technological University (ATU) and University of Galway. As well as leading R&D in acute ischemic stroke, Cerenovus also manufactures and supplies approved devices to global markets.”

At our offices in Galway, our strong talent focuses on the development of devices to treat strokes using our unique capabilities simulating the underlying diseases that cause stroke. These devices are then manufactured in partnership with the large supplier base that forms part of the medtech ecosystem in Ireland. We are honoured to receive this award. It is testament to the dedication of our team in Galway, the wider CERENOVUS team globally, our research partners, collaborators and physician advisors who work together to push the boundaries of science, technology and medicine to put new devices in the hands of physicians that make stroke treatment faster, easier, and even more effective.”
Sinead Keogh added: “We’d like to congratulate Boston Scientific Cork which opened in 1998, and now employs more than 1,400 people, for winning the Best Process-Product Innovation in Medtech Award for its steam sterilisation process which has led to enhanced control of the supply chain, upskilling of team members, fostered links with the local academic institutions all while having a low environmental impact. As well as global healthcare technology Medtronic for its commitment to creating an inclusive workplace for which it won the Best Diversity and Representation Company Initiative Award 2022 thereby recognising its enhanced culture’s role in helping all voices be heard.”
Enterprise Ireland Head of Lifesciences Garrett Murray said: “Innovative indigenous High Potential Start-ups, SMEs and large companies are integral to Ireland’s medtech success. I am delighted that FIRE1 has been named Emerging Medtech Company of the Year in a very competitive category with a range of excellent award nominees. Headquartered and manufacturing at the DCU Alpha Centre in Dublin, Ireland, FIRE1 is a connected medical device solutions company dedicated to improving outcomes for people suffering with chronic diseases. Its first product is a novel remote monitoring solution to improve outcomes for Heart Failure patients, which affects one in five people. FIRE 1 is an exemplar of what can be achieved in Ireland by highly innovative companies. Our rich ecosystem is also bolstered by the role that partners play, and this year Harmac has introduced new technologies, capabilities, processes and expertise to target the point of care diagnostics sector earning the Medtech Partner/Supplier of the Year Award. To preserve our future, industry needs to embrace sustainability. With a vision to advance healthcare for everyone, Beckman Coulter’s commitment to ‘Cohabiting with the environment’ with a four-pronged initiative centred on, water optimisation, renewable energy, Co2 emission reduction, and environmental practices, saw it stand out to win the Sustainable Medtech Company of the Year Award.”
IDA Ireland’s Head of MedTech Rachel Shelly said: “In addition to supporting the creation of medtech startups to address unmet clinical needs, BioInnovate Ireland offers bespoke training to both MNC and indigenous companies to further embed innovation into their businesses. For example, BioInnovate’s collaboration over 11 years with Boston Scientific has led to the creation of new devices, 120 senior engineers completing the programme, and €1 million contributed by the company. This partnership approach demonstrates BioInnovate’s strong commitment to supporting innovative culture change, and which saw it win the Collaboration in Medtech Award. Another key area of innovation is digital health. Bluedrop Medical has developed an advanced system, with sensors and AI enabled software, to identify the signs of ulcer as early as possible, reducing the number of amputations in Ireland attributed to diabetes which currently amount to 500 every year, and for which the company has won the Digital Health Innovation of the Year Award. These life-altering technologies could not be developed without the access to world-class talent. The winner of the Best Talent Strategy in Medtech Award is Beckman Coulter which has experienced rapid growth, including the ramp up of two new product lines, and has showcased the stories of its passionate employees and its enhanced candidate experience, key contributors to its continued success and growth at its Clare facility.”
