The Low Carb Programme from Diabetes Digital Media (DDM) has been included on the NHS Innovation Accelerator, as well as DDM’s CEO Arjun Panesar.
The Accelerator is an NHS England initiative delivered in partnership with all 15 Academic Health Science Networks across England. It helps NHS sites to adopt pioneering and high-impact innovations, designed by exceptional individuals with a passion for learning and a commitment to sharing their learnings widely, to support the NHS Long Term Plan.
Panesar started the digital diabetes support community following his grandfather’s diagnosis of type 2 diabetes, and it has since evolved to become a platform for nearly 400,000 people worldwide.
CEO of Diabetes Digital Media’s (DDM), Arjun Panesar, said: “I’m thrilled that the Low Carb Programme has been accepted into the NHS Innovation Accelerator (NIA) Fellowship. I’m tremendously excited to scale hope, empowerment and type 2 diabetes remission as part of the NHS Long Term Plan.”
The Low Carb Programme is a structured behaviour change programme for people with type 2 diabetes, prediabetes and obesity which launched in 2015. It enables members to access educational materials, monitor their health and receive support from an online network.
Published research has shown that the Low Carb Programme is successful in achieving glycaemic control, weight loss and reducing hypoglycaemic medications. Earlier this year it was approved into the NHS apps library and last summer the digital health intervention received a CE Mark, leading to registration with the Medicines & Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA). It has also gained QISMET approval so it can be prescribed on the NHS.
