InterVent Cardio has been crowned as the winner of the 2024 TBAT Innovation Challenge. The annual competition, which was held on October 9th at the National Space Centre in Leicester, focuses on fostering and promoting innovation within small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), providing both financial and business support to help advance transformative ideas and products.
InterVent Cardio clinched the victory by unveiling its groundbreaking pericardial balloon support system, PAL. The company uses 21st-century space technological know-how to provide innovative medical device solutions for patients with heart disease. Cardiac pump failure, where the heart is simply unable to pump enough blood to support the body’s needs, remains one of the biggest unsolved problems in cardiology.
PAL is a novel, patent-protected balloon support device, designed by cardiologists and space engineers to exploit the body’s natural surfaces, sitting in the pericardial space outside the heart and outside the circulation to provide support directly to the heart. InterVent Cardio’s innovation has the potential to save countless lives, playing a major role in the treatment of heart failure.
TBAT and Headline Sponsor Shakespeare Martineau delivered an unforgettable evening, showcasing the incredible talent and potential within the industry. With ten finalists pitching their businesses and projects, the event featured a diverse and impressive range of ideas and projects from various sectors, including artificial intelligence, sustainability, med-tech, and aviation.
Roger Harcourt, Partner and Head of Office from Shakespeare Martineau said: "The level of innovation and determination demonstrated by this year’s participants is truly inspiring. We are honoured to partner with TBAT Innovation and support these SMEs as they strive to create impactful solutions and shape the future of their sectors."

As this year’s winners, InterVent Cardio will receive a comprehensive support package valued at 65,000 GBP, including a 5,000 GBP cash prize. The 65,000 GBP prize package will be split between the winner InterVent Cardio and the two runners-up Flux Aviation and CoolRun and will be tailored specifically to their business needs.
Flux Aviation was awarded a runner-up prize for its work developing electric-motors and batteries to power next-generation electric aircraft. CoolRun was also named a runner-up for their company’s flagship product, the CoolRun Pod, a game-changer in zero-emission, temperature-controlled transport.
Sam Stephens, Founding Director of TBAT Innovation, praised the quality of entries this year: "The Innovation Challenge Finalist Showcase is a testament to the remarkable creativity and resilience of SMEs. It’s rewarding to witness their hard work and innovation being celebrated and we’re proud to be part of their journey toward success."
David Adlam, Co-Founder and Chief Medical Officer of InterVent Cardio said: "We hope that this will be a real springboard for the company because we have this great concept for a device that we think will really transform the care of patients. I am a cardiologist myself and these are my patients. We hope to be able to build from this to reach out and network with all of the people we need to make this business a success."
InterVent Cardio was also crowned Audience Winner on the night, an award supported by Charnwood Campus Science and Technology Park.
